Hotels on the 4 continents where the company operates will turn off lights for an hour to raise awareness amongst guests and employees

Palma de Mallorca – Hotels operated by Meliá Hotels International on four continents will take part in Earth Hour 2012 tomorrow as part of an initiative to combat climate change promoted by the WWF. Hotels will turn off the lights on their facades between 8:30pm and 9:30pm local time in every country. In previous years a number of company hotels took part on an individual basis, but this year the hotel company will take its environmental commitment one step further and involve the entire company.

The initiative will be followed by hotels in Europe, the Americas, Asia and Africa, in the countries in which Meliá Hotels International operates. As well as the general “blackout” of the facades, several hotels will carry out other activities during the day to raise awareness amongst guests and employees. Among them, dimming the interior lights, musical performances, candlelight dinners, documentaries on climate change, energy efficiency exhibitions and workshops, and ecological welcome gifts.

Examples can be found in the Americas, with the hotels in Brazil and the Dominican Republic putting on shows by candlelight including the presentation of ecological gifts. In Indonesia, the Meliá Benoa and Meliá Bali will serve dinner by the light of the stars, while in Spain there will be an acoustic music concert at the ME Madrid during Earth Hour and sustainable activities at the Mini Club for younger guests at the Palacio de Isora.

In corporate offices the company will be presenting information about Earth Hour on the melia.com website and social media. It will also encourage all employees to support the blackout in their own homes.

Meliá Hotels International, the leading hotel company in Spain, launched a pioneering energy saving and energy efficiency programme six years ago to reduce the environmental impact of its activities. Today, the consolidation of the “SAVE Project”, with 200 participating hotels, confirms the company’s commitment to the future as a responsible and sustainable company, as well as highlighting the profitability of efficient destination management.
