RESTRICTIONS ON LIQUIDS, CREAMS AND GELS IN HAND LUGGAGE
06.11.2006 [12:49] Today, new restrictions on hand luggage in the European Union take effect. The new EU security regulations forbid air passengers from carrying liquids and semi-liquids in their hand luggage, with certain exceptions.
The items now banned from hand luggage are all liquids (including water, beverages, soups, and syrups), perfumes, gels, and shampoos, pastes (including toothpaste), mascara, creams, lotions, and oils, sprays, aerosols (including shaving foam, other soaps and deodorants), solid-liquid mixtures, and other articles of a similar consistency.
These restrictions apply to all passengers and flights departing from or in transit in the airports of the European Union*, Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland.
However, there are some exceptions to these restrictions. Passengers may carry small amounts of the banned substances, but only in containers with a maximum capacity of 100 milliliters (about 3 oz. or half a cup) These containers must be carried in a transparent plastic bag that can be sealed with a zip or otherwise. The bag may not exceed one liter in capacity, and must be shown at security checkpoints separate from other hand luggage.
Passengers travelling with infants may carry baby milk or juice. Passengers with special medical or dietary needs may carry medicines in liquid, gel, or aerosol formats, dietetic products, insulin, and other medicines in the amounts necessary for the duration of the flight. But they must submit proof of authenticity at security checkpoints.
The restricted items may be acquired at the EU airport shops accessible only to passengers on board EU airline flights. However, passengers changing planes in other airports must carry them in sealed transparent bags in which the sales receipt is visible, and the bags must remain sealed until the final destination. Iberia will deliver all restricted items purchased aboard its flight in sealed bags that comply with these standards.
All articles that do not comply with the terms detailed above will be confiscated by security personnel.
These restrictions do not apply to checked luggage.
European Union Regulation 1546/2006 also states that passengers must remove overcoats and jackets and put them through the scanner with their hand luggage while they walk though the metal detection arch. Laptop computers and other large electronic devices must also be scanned separately from other hand luggage.
These measures are similar to those already in force for departing passengers in the United Kingdom; and for departing and arriving passengers in the Untied States.
